From 1 April 2009, the “Gas Safe Register” replaced the CORGI Register for Gas Engineers, and it is a requirement that all gas safe registered engineers carry additional commercial gas qualifications for the installation, repair, service and maintenance of equipment in commercial premises where gas pipes, cookers, boilers, heaters, meters and appliances are operated. It is a criminal offence to appoint an engineer who has not got the CODNCO1 qualification.
You can check this by calling the Gas Safe Register prior to works commencing in order to verify the registration of the engineer. Domestic gas engineers who do not hold the correct qualification are also breaking the law by carrying out commercial work. Our engineers have been verified by us, but will not take offence if asked for further verification with the Gas Safe Register when they arrive on site.
Works that are deemed to be commercial and must be worked on by a commercial qualified gas safe registered engineer include the following:
- Gas installations with a volume of .035 Cu Metres or more
- Any gas pipe that is larger than 35mm in diamater
- Any boiler or gas appliance that has an output capacity of more than 70kw
- Any commercial premises which contains commercial appliances (including all commercial kitchens, restaurants, takeaways, hospitals and schools), and most communal blocks or buildings with shared heating.
